Bringing an AR site back after its server was destroyed

The brand’s hosting was physically destroyed, together with the only copy of its augmented reality site. Printed markers were already in customers’ hands. We rebuilt the site so those markers work again.

The problem.

No source code, no backups. Only partial copies in a web archive and the printed products themselves.

What we built.

  • The site rebuilt from web archive copies.
  • Marker files regenerated byte for byte from the images, so already printed markers are recognised.
  • An upgrade to current AR libraries and 3D models converted to a modern format.
  • Fixes for iPhone video autoplay and a clear screen when the camera is unavailable.

Decisions worth explaining.

Tuned against look-alike markers

Two markers scored 0.68 similar to each other, so the threshold went to 0.75. The right marker scores 0.96 to 0.99, the wrong one never passes.

In numbers.
